Ron Creevey

Ron Creevey amongst other terrified competitors witnessed a freak twister whilst competing in the famous Sydney to Hobart yacht race on December 28, 2001.

Nine yachts were knocked out of the Aussie classic by the waterspout and sheets of giant hailstones.

Race favourite Nicorette, where Ron was part of the crew, was blown on its side when it was forced through the tornado’s raging centre.

Skipper Ludde Ingvall said: “It was the most awesome and awful experience.”

Ingvall told how he feared for his life as he felt himself being sucked into the air.

He added: “It was like a wrestler grabbing the back of my jacket and trying to lift me off my feet.”

Film taken from the yacht showed the twister moving towards it. Ingvall sent all but three of his 23-strong crew below deck as it hit.

Nicorette’s mainsail was ruined but the yacht used a back-up to stay in the race and reached 6th position on the night.
